Stand For Something, or Fall From Relevance

What’s up y’all, Harkos Here.

“If you stand for nothing, you'll fall for anything.”

That's a very well-known quote, but when it comes to music I like to say,

“If you stand for nothing, you'll fall out of relevance.”

That’s because who you are, and what you stand for, is essential to growing your fan base.

Just think of one person in pop culture that you follow the most. Whether they're a politician, musician, athlete, or religious figure, it doesn’t matter. But, think of the top five things that they are most known for.

When you look, you’ll realize that they're most known for those things, because every time that you see them on social media, they are representing those five things at all times.

On the flip side, we have also seen many times, especially in politicians, where people try to live up to a false reality. When they do that, they end up doing something that is out of line with the five, and then they fall out of favor with people. That's because they  were not living up to the brand that they built for themselves.

Now I know the word brand has a lot of misunderstanding surrounding it, because people throw it around all day. But in reality, brand is who you are, and what you're known for.

So as an artist you need to make sure that your brand is on point at all times. And that's pretty simple to do as long as you stay true to who you are.

Setting up your brand is as simple as these 3 steps:

Step 1:

Think of the top five things that you are known for to your closest friends or relatives.

Are these the five things that you want portrayed to the world?

Hopefully they are, because they signify who you are.

Step 2:

After you have the five things identified, go and check your music.

Does all of your music speak to those five things?

It doesn't have to be all five things at once, but in general, it needs to touch on all five at some point. Your music is the audible expression of who you are, just to a fire beat.

Step 3:

Now once you got that straight, go check your content on social media.

Is it entertaining and engaging? Does it speak visually to the music?

That is where people are going to see you first, and the most. If you're not on point with your brand on socials, and they go check out your music, it doesn't matter.

Because they're not going to like it.

You're going to be misleading them from the beginning of the relationship, and they're not going to want to mess with you ever again.

So make sure that your social feed matches what your brand is.

It’s that simple. Just 3 steps to securing your brand.

Obviously this is high level, but it gives you a solid 30,000 foot view of things.

After your brand is solid, the fun work can begin. The creative work! Which is what you love most.

Go out and post daily, short form, entertaining content that speaks to your music and brand as an artist. I went into more detail on content posting strategy in last weeks email (if you missed that one, head to the blog page of Apex Music System’s website HERE)
